Nate Newton’s Weight Loss Success
Dallas Cowboy great & 6-time pro bowl selection Nate Newton is now one of the DFW Bariatric Institute’s greatest success stories. In 2010, Nate decided it was time start living healthier and begin the process of actively shedding some of the weight that propelled him into one of the league’s most overbearing offensive linemen during the course of his 15 exceptional seasons in the National Football League. After his retirement, Nate gained an excessive amount of weight and became dangerously obese. But after treatment at the DFW Bariatric Institute, Nate has reached his goal weight in under a year, getting rid of nearly 170 pounds as the result of effective weight loss surgery, lifestyle changes, and a commitment to reaching his goal and reducing a number of serious health problems for which he was at risk.*
Nate’s Weight Loss Journey
Nate played a pivotal role in the Cowboy’s Super Bowl Championship teams of the 1990’s; taking full advantage of his gargantuan 6’3”, 325 pound frame, allowing the potent Dallas Cowboy offense to score almost at will. Upon his retirement from professional football in 1999, Nate steadily put on an additional 75 pounds to his body frame, transforming this decorated NFL star into a serious health risk. Tipping the scales in excess of 400 pounds & having a Body Mass Index of 50, Nate was diagnosed with obesity and was considered “super obese” by his evaluating physicians. Nate was being consumed by constant arthritis all over his body, high blood pressure and the inability to even walk comfortably, and his need to be a positive and healthy role model to his children. He elected to take action and scheduled his weight loss surgery at the DFW Bariatric Institute.*
About Nate Newton’s Weight Loss Surgery – Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
After learning about his options, Nate decided to undergo Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) or Gastric Sleeve Resection Surgery. This is a weight loss surgery procedure that is vastly different from other bariatric surgery techniques. In this operation, 70% of the stomach is completely removed, very reminiscent to a stomach stapling technique. Through Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery, the stomach takes on the shape of a sleeve whereby only a few ounces of food may now be ingested at a time. Essentially, vertical sleeve gastrectomy is successful for patients due to the diminished food capacity of the stomach, and in turn – reduction of the hunger hormones.
Nate underwent the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure on April 19th, 2010, and just under one year later and 170 pounds lighter, he reached his goal weight.*
Life after Surgery for Nate Newton
Only 1 month after Nate’s VSG weight loss surgery procedure, he was already showing drastic improvement and was well on his way to living a much healthier lifestyle. He had lost over 70 pounds and was no longer a diabetic. Continuing to strictly adhere to his treatment regimen, Nate was down to 267 pounds by the summer of 2010, leaving him with 100 more pounds left to lose in order to meet his weight loss goal. He ultimately lost that last 100 pounds and reached his goal weight – right around 200 – by March of 2011.
By embracing foundational lifestyle changes through diet and exercise after the initial surgery, Nate lost a significant amount of weight. He does not suffer from diabetes & high blood pressure as he once did, and is off medications for both.
We look forward to watching Nate continue to flourish in our program and we are proud of him for remaining dedicated and committed to his ultimate goal. For more up to date information on Nate’s surgical experience, please check out our Fan Page on Facebook to chart Nate’s progress.*
