Morbid obesity is a serious epidemic affecting millions of people in the United States. Texas is among the top states in which obesity is prevalent, with an estimated 60 percent of adults being overweight or obese. New bariatric surgery techniques have emerged to help morbidly obese individuals improve the quality of their lives. An innovative bariatric procedure, the LAP-BAND® System is the least invasive way to safely and effectively lose weight over an extended period of time. Since 2003, board-certified bariatric surgeon David Kim has helped thousands of patients live their lives again through LAP-BAND® System surgery and other leading-edge bariatric procedures at our weight loss surgery practice. Dr. Kim, Dr. Bridget Holden, and our team are proud of our record for high-quality treatments, low complication rates, and customized surgical care, which has earned us recognition as a “Center of Excellence®” by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently approved the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure for use in patients who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, plus at least one comorbidity condition related to obesity – such as hypertension, heart disease, sleep apnea, Type-2 diabetes, and other conditions. This new approval from the FDA makes it possible for millions of patients who may have been deemed ineligible in the past to qualify as candidates for the LAP-BAND® System. The procedure is now the only bariatric surgery option in the United States that is FDA-approved for use in patients with a BMI of 30-35, plus one or more severe, obesity-related health conditions.
What is the LAP-BAND® System?
The LAP-BAND® System is a bariatric surgery procedure offered at the Kim Bariatric Institute that enables patients to safely and gradually lose weight and improve their health. The LAP-BAND® System procedure uses an adjustable silicone band filled with saline to create a smaller stomach chamber that strictly limits the amount of food that can be consumed at one time. Because the smaller chamber fills up quickly during mealtime, individuals feel fuller faster. In addition, the individual’s appetite is curbed for several hours during the slower digestion process. Feelings of fullness and satisfaction enable LAP-BAND® System patients to eat smaller meals, stay fuller longer, and lose tremendous amounts of weight over a long period of time.
Benefits of LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery
The most obvious and rewarding benefits of LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band surgery are dramatic weight loss and improved quality of life. Patients lose an average of 50-70 percent of their excess body weight over a period of two to three years. Gradual weight loss in the years following the procedure can bring significant improvements in health. LAP-BAND® System surgery patients can reduce the risk of developing severe health conditions related to morbid obesity, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, sleep apnea, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes, acid reflux disease, asthma, and osteoarthritis.
LAP-BAND® System Risks
Patients who are considering LAP-BAND® System surgery should be aware that, as with any surgical procedure, adjustable gastric banding treatments do carry some degree of risk. Patients should also note that the LAP-BAND® System is primarily a tool to help you lose weight effectively, and the patient will need to commit to a number of dietary and lifestyle changes in order to achieve safe and successful weight loss.
Some of the risks of the LAP-BAND® System include:
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Slippage of the band along the stomach
- Leakage of the band
- Damage to internal organs
- Blood clots or pulmonary embolism in the post-operative period
There are also a number of requirements that must be met in order for a patient to qualify as a candidate for the LAP-BAND® System procedure. Please visit our Am I a Candidate? page for more information. Dr. David Kim or Dr. Bridget Holden will discuss all risks to you during your initial consultation, and answer any questions you may have. They will also be happy to recommend alternative weight loss treatments, surgical or non-surgical, should they determine that the LAP-BAND® System is not the best option for your unique needs.
LAP-BAND® System vs. Gastric Bypass Surgery
LAP-BAND® System surgery, one of the most popular procedures at our weight loss surgery practice, carries several advantages over other bariatric techniques. The procedure is less invasive than gastric bypass surgery and gastric sleeve resection because it does not involve cutting, stapling, or other permanent alterations to the stomach and intestines. Because of this, there is less risk for infection or other complications, including death. There is also less risk for malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies with the LAP-BAND® System. Since the digestive system is not rerouted, patients are able to digest food in a completely natural way. Recovery time and visible scarring are also reduced because the procedure is performed laparoscopically. Treatment is also completely reversible and easily tailored to the specific needs and preferences of each patient, unlike gastric bypass surgery. The adjustable gastric band can be loosened or tightened to promote the most successful weight loss results. For more information on the benefits of LAP-BAND® System surgery, we invite you to contact our practice and schedule a consultation with Dr. Kim or Dr. Holden, the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band experts in the Dallas, Fort Worth, and Frisco area.
