Biliopancreatic Diversion (DS) with Duodenal Switch
Biliary Pancreatic Diversion, also known as DS or BPD, reduces the size of the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch. The procedure restricts the amount of food that can be consumed in one sitting, and alters the small intestine to make it possible for bile and pancreatic juices to meet digested food closer to the middle or the end of it – leading to less absorption of calories and nutrients by the body.
About 3/4ths of the stomach is removed during DS, restricting food intake as well as output of acids. The duodenum is a part of the small intestine. This end of the small intestine is re-routed to the new stomach pouch, separating the flow of pancreatic juices and bile. This allows for digestive juices and food to meet in the lower part of the intestine – creating malabsorption of calories. Ultimately, Biliary Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch is both a restrictive and a malabsorptive weight loss surgery procedure. It restricts the amount of food intake by making the stomach smaller, and cuts down on the amount of nutrients and calories the body absorbs.
The entire DS procedure takes about two to three hours to complete.
Biliary Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch can be performed laparoscopically using tiny instruments and small incisions. This typically results in less recovery time and less residual scarring from incisions. Many patients can return to less physically rigorous types of work after about two weeks, and more physically strenuous work or activities can often be resumed after a month.
Patients should be mindful that this procedure, like other bariatric surgery treatments, is only one step in an ongoing process designed to help with weight loss. Follow-up appointments with Dr. Kim will be necessary to make sure you are healing properly and that you are losing weight safely and effectively. There are a variety of lifestyle and dietary changes that will be required after surgery to provide patients with the tools they need to maintain a healthy and successful weight loss.

- Patients can often eat larger meals before feeling full when compared to other weight loss surgery procedures yet still accomplish the greatest amount of weightloss.
- Malabsorption coupled with restricted food intake can lead to significant amounts of weight loss that exceeds the weight loss of Lap Band, Gastric Bypass, and Gastric Sleeve Surgery.
- Morbidly obese patients can lose excess weight and reduce risks to severe health problems associated with obesity, including stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.
- Patients who are classified as superobese – with a BMI of 50 or more – can often benefit from this procedure.
- It has the highest rate of cure of Diabetes Mellitus Type II at 99%.
