How to Properly Plan your Weight Loss Surgery with Health Benefits
If you are a prospective patient with health benefits, understanding your insurance policy is one of the first and foremost steps in planning your weight loss surgery. Here at Kim Bariatric Institute, our staff includes multiple insurance specialists and coordinators to help guide you through the process.
"The complexity of the requirements and coverage can be confusing, and there is no manual on what questions to ask," says Dr. Kim. "The best thing to do is enlist the assistance of an insurance counselor. By answering a few simple questions and providing the policy information off of your insurance card, we can determine all the details of your coverage. This can be done by submitting a 'Contact Us' form, or in a 10 minute phone call."
The majority of insurance programs take approximately four months from time of contact to scheduling surgery, notes Dr. Kim. As we are nearing the end of the calendar year, however, planning and scheduling an insurance-covered weight loss procedure will pose a much greater challenge, but it is not impossible. Ideally, if you are interested in having a weight loss surgery before the end of the year, you should contact us no later than July or August.
"Surgery dates are limited," says Dr. Kim. "A simple call to our clinic will start this process and allow us to verify exactly what your benefits are. Once we have this information, we can build the plan for you, outlining all the steps required to reach the end goal of having surgery and starting your new life."
