The Kim Bariatric Institute Weight Loss Program
Those interested in bariatric surgery will find education and support in our Kim Bariatric Institute program, which is dedicated to helping obese individuals stay on track with their weight loss goals. The Kim Bariatric Institute helps patients during every stage of the weight loss process – from the initial consultation to the actual gastric bypass, gastric sleeve resection, Duodenal Switch, or the LAP-BAND® System procedure to the follow-up appointments at our weight loss surgery practice. Our Program features a variety of support services that aim to transform the lives of patients for the better, including:
- Gastric sleeve resection, gastric bypass, duodenal switch, weight loss surgery revision or LAP-BAND® System
- Dedicated weight loss team that attends to your specific needs and goals.
- Educational Seminars (Bariatric University) with our nurse coordinator.
- Support Group Meetings
- Nutrition and Lifestyle evaluation and recommended plans.
- Lifelong follow-up exams after surgery.
There are two ways to start your weight loss journey. Individuals who have insurance coverage and wish to undergo weight loss surgery or another procedure must submit a medical history packet so that our team can recommend the most effective weight loss treatment option. In addition, we will help patients obtain insurance approval for their weight loss operation. However, if you already have insurance approval or would like to pay cash for your bariatric surgery, gastric bypass or gastric sleeve surgery, you may participate in our Fast Track Program.

Meet with your surgeon and our Kim Bariatric Institute staff to determine the best procedure for your weight loss goals.
Our staff of bariatric professionals is here to help you in each phase of your weight loss journey. When you come in for your initial consultation with your surgeon you will be weighed and measured to get a true BMI. Our clinical staff will get you in a room to have a swallow test to check for hernias or any existing esophageal or gastric issues. One of our Physician Assistants will get any additional medical history information. You will then meet with Dr. Kim to determine which procedure is best suited to your goals and lifestyle. Before you leave, you will be able to sit down with our insurance/financing department to determine your insurance requirements or payment options.
Schedule your surgery.
After you have met your insurance requirements or if you have chosen the fast track program it will be time to schedule your surgery and be on your new journey. If you have already received approval from our insurance company or if you will be paying cash or financing your procedure, then you should be able to schedule your surgery within 2 weeks.
Attend Bariatric University.
In order to make sure our patients are well prepared for this exciting new journey, we have created an educational program called Bariatric University. Run by nurse coordinator, Pam Katekaru, R.N., this class details what you can expect before, during and after surgery. You will learn what your procedure can and cannot accomplish and you will receive step-by-step post-operative care instructions, including suggested meal plans and recipes.
Prepare for your gastric bypass, gastric sleeve procedure, LAP-BAND® System, REALIZE® Band, or Duodenal Switch procedure.
A few weeks before your surgery, you will be placed on a liquid diet that not only helps decrease the size of the liver, but it also cleans out the colon and allows better visualization during your laparoscopic. You will also need to have your pre-operative appointment at the hospital, which includes blood work, EKG and Chest X-rays.
Start on your path to a healthier, happier life.
