What Is The Best Way To Treat Obesity?

photo842In part one and part two of our blog series on Obesity as a Disease, we discussed the need to increase the public’s access to treatment. However, the fact that morbid obesity is caused by so many contributing factors is one of the reasons the disease is very complicated to treat. When someone has a condition such as high blood pressure, you can create a positive impact with simple prescription medication. However, morbid obesity has so many contributing factors that pills are probably the worst way to approach treatment.

Though obesity does not always run in families, a good third of my patients at DFW Bariatric Institute have other family members suffering from the same genetic condition. Then there are cultural factors to take into account. In America, we live in a society that has progressed from agrarian to manufacturing to service – therefore, though you and I may work all day long, we don’t really burn off many calories at our jobs. In addition to expending significantly less calories, we are constantly exposed to a massive amount of food – foods that are overly processed and very high in calories and fat – and these environmental factors contribute to obesity’s prevalence as well.

Obesity really is a multifaceted disease that needs to be treated with multiple approaches. Treating obesity with pills alone is not a long-term solution, has a lot of side effects, and only eliminates a very small amount of weight. In nearly every case, the negative side effects of obesity treatment with pills outweigh the potential benefits. For these reasons, bariatric surgeries such as gastric bypass and adjustable gastric banding can jumpstart your recovery. When combined with nutrition education, exercise programs, and support systems, bariatric surgery is an effective way of dramatically improving quality of life.
