BMI Calculator
What does your BMI mean?
BMI, or body mass index, is a system of measurement that helps a patient figure out how overweight he or she is. A BMI of 20 to 25 is considered normal. 25 to 30 is considered overweight. 30.1 to 34.9 is considered obese. You are a candidate for weight loss surgery if your BMI is 40 or greater or if you have a BMI between 35 and 39.9 along with a serious health problem. The U.S. FDA has recently approved the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System for use in patients who have a BMI of 30 or more and at least one serious health problem (comorbidity) related to obesity.
"I thought I was a pretty happy fat person. Hiding behind my jokes and laughter, I did not know how much my weight controlled my life. I never knew what true happiness was until I had my surgery. Some people don't like to tell people when they have had weight loss surgery but I tell everyone because I feel everyone deserves to be this happy!"

Gastric bypass surgery is a popular and effective way for morbidly obese patients to lose significant amounts of weight and start living healthier lifestyles. However, years after the surgery, some patients may begin gaining weight once again. This is often because of a physiological problem that can occur after gastric bypass surgery, and it can be remedied by a new, incisionless procedure called ROSE (Restorative Obesity Surgery Endoscopic). Dr. David D. Kim, serving Dallas – Fort Worth and the Arlington, Texas area, can help you with this innovative technique designed for patients experiencing weight regain or no significant weight loss after gastric bypass surgery.
After gastric bypass surgery, the stomach pouch or stoma (the connector between the pouch and the small intestine) created during the procedure can become enlarged, allowing more food intake and progressive weight regain. The ROSE (Restorative Obesity Surgery Endoscopic) procedure repairs this, making it possible for the original gastric bypass to start working more effectively.
ROSE (Restorative Obesity Surgery Endoscopic) is not only designed to help patients who are regaining weight after gastric bypass surgery, it’s also designed to provide quick, effective treatment with minimal recovery time and no scarring whatsoever. By using small medical instruments that are inserted through the mouth instead of an incision in the abdominal region, Dr. David D. Kim can restore the stomach pouch and stoma to limit food intake without making any incisions on the body.
Candidates for ROSE surgery are typically those who have experienced weight re-gain after undergoing a gastric bypass procedure. You may also qualify for ROSE surgery if you have had a gastric bypass procedure but have not been losing weight. Dr. Kim will meet with you for an initial ROSE surgery consultation to determine if you meet the necessary requirements for the procedure.
ROSE surgery is typically performed by using a small endoscope and tiny surgical instruments that are inserted through your mouth. These instruments are guided into the stomach pouch, where tissue anchors are placed around the pouch, as well as the stoma, to reduce their size. Although there are some exceptions, patients typically are not required to stay in the hospital overnight after ROSE surgery.
One of the most distinct advantages of the ROSE procedure is that the recovery process is typically very mild. Since no incisions are made to perform ROSE surgery, there is less discomfort following the procedure and absolutely no scarring. The most frequently described side effect from patients has been a temporary sore throat. Specific recovery times will depend on each patient and the extent of the procedure. Dr. David D. Kim will discuss all aspects of ROSE surgery with you at your initial consultation.
