Before the LAP-BAND® System or Gastric Bypass Procedure — Seminar in Fort Worth

The decision to undergo bariatric surgery is an important one that will have an impact on the rest of your life. Qualified candidates for gastric bypass, gastric sleeve resection, or the LAP-BAND® System procedure are encouraged to attend an educational seminar at our Fort Worth-area practice, as well as complete a variety of other steps before their operation to ensure the most successful outcome. Dr. David Kim is an experienced professional who was named by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery as a “Surgeon of Excellence” for his dedication to providing outstanding care and maintaining low complication rates. Together with his knowledgeable and caring support team, he helps patients realize and achieve their weight loss dreams and live healthier, happier lives.

Your Steps to Weight Loss Success - The Live Life Again Process

Individuals interested in a gastric bypass, gastric sleeve resection, or LAP-BAND® System procedure in Fort Worth must complete the following steps before surgery:

Step 1: Join Our Live Life Again Weight Loss Program

Those interested in bariatric surgery must join our Live Life Again program, which is dedicated to helping obese individuals stay on track with their weight loss goals. Live Life Again helps patients during every stage of the weight loss process — from the initial consultation to the actual gastric bypass or LAP-BAND® System procedure to the follow-up appointments at our Fort Worth-area practice. The program features a variety of support services that aim to transform the lives of patients for the better, including:

  • LAP-BAND® System, gastric bypass, or gastric sleeve resection procedure
  • Dedicated weight-loss team that attends to your specific needs and goals
  • Clinical pathways
  • Educational seminars (Bariatric University) with our nurse coordinator
  • LAP-BAND® System, gastric bypass, or gastric sleeve resection seminar hosted by Dr. Kim
  • Support group meetings
  • Nutrition and lifestyle evaluation and recommended plan
  • Lifelong follow-up exams after surgery

There are two ways to join our Live Life Again program. Individuals who have insurance coverage and wish to undergo LAP-BAND® System surgery or another procedure must enroll in a patient seminar at our Fort Worth practice, as well as submit a medical history packet so that our team can recommend the most effective weight loss treatment option. In addition, we will help patients obtain insurance approval for their weight loss operation. However, if a patient already has insurance approval or would like to pay cash for their LAP-BAND® System surgery or other procedure, they can participate in our Fast Track Program.

Fast Track Program

We also offer a Fast Track program for patients who have already received approval from their insurance company or who plan to pay for their gastric bypass, gastric sleeve resection, or LAP-BAND® System procedure with cash at our Fort Worth-area practice. This program expedites the Live Life Again process, enabling patients to schedule their bariatric procedure within two weeks. Our team will carefully review the patient's medical history to determine which procedure is best suited to their goals and help the patient find the right financing option. Patients will then meet with Dr. Kim for a consultation as well as attend fast-paced procedure education classes dedicated to the specific operation they will undergo. To register for our Fast Track program, please contact our practice.

Step 2: Attend a Weight Loss Surgery Symposium or Consult with Dr. Kim

Patients interested in gastric bypass, gastric sleeve resection, or a LAP-BAND® System procedure are encouraged to attend an educational seminar at our Fort Worth-area practice hosted by Dr. Kim once a month. The symposium is designed to help patients decide which bariatric procedure is correct for them. Patients will have the opportunity to talk first-hand with other patients who have undergone LAP-BAND® System surgery or another bariatric procedure, as well as meet our esteemed surgeon, Dr. Kim. They can also view before-and-after photos of former patients and hear their amazing testimonials. In addition, patients have the chance to discuss any questions or concerns they may have about LAP-BAND® System surgery or any other procedure during the seminar. Register to attend a weight loss seminar.

If you cannot attend a seminar, you may arrange for an initial consultation with Dr. Kim. All that is required is that you fill out the Medical History Packet prior to your consultation. Please download the packet and fax or mail it to us.

Step 3: Attend Bariatric University

Prior to their gastric bypass, gastric sleeve resection, or LAP-BAND® System procedure and after attending an educational seminar, patients from Fort Worth and nearby areas will attend a class dedicated to their operation as part of an educational program called Bariatric University. Run by nurse coordinator, Pam Katekaru, R.N., this class details what patients can expect before, during, and after surgery. Patients will learn what their procedure can and cannot accomplish and receive step-by-step post-operative care instructions.

Step 4: Meet with Dr. Kim Prior to Surgery

After attending Bariatric University, patients will meet with Dr. Kim for a final personal consultation. At this time, Dr. Kim will discuss with the best preparation process to ensure the safest and most successful surgery. He will also make sure that patients fully understand the surgical and follow-up processes and clear up any last-minute questions or concerns.

Step 5: Prepare for Your LAP-BAND® System / Gastric Bypass Procedure

Patients will be placed on the OPTIFAST® liquid diet for up to two weeks, according to pre-operative weight. This diet not only decreases the size of the liver, but it also cleans out the colon and allows better visualization during the surgical procedure. Dr. Kim may make other preparatory recommendations during the final consult. Following these and all other suggestions can help make your bariatric operation a safe and successful one.
