BMI, or body mass index, is a system of measurement that helps a patient figure out how overweight he or she is. A BMI of 20 to 25 is considered normal. 25 to 30 is considered overweight. 30.1 to 34.9 is considered obese. You are a candidate for weight loss surgery if your BMI is 40 or greater or if you have a BMI between 35 and 39.9 along with a serious health problem. The U.S. FDA has recently approved the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System for use in patients who have a BMI of 30 or more and at least one serious health problem (comorbidity) related to obesity.

The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band Procedure

During LAP-BAND® System surgery at our Fort Worth, Texas-area practice, a saline-filled adjustable gastric band is inserted into the abdominal area laparoscopically and placed over a section of the upper stomach near the esophagus. This creates a smaller stomach pouch that holds less food so the patient feels fuller faster, and the band can be adjusted or removed at any time according to the patient's needs. The gastric band is fastened into place, and the incisions are closed with sutures. A tube connected to the band helps Dr. Kim adjust the amount of saline in it, effectively adjusting its size. This is helpful in regulating the patient's weight loss rate after surgery. For more information on the LAP-BAND® System, please read our frequently asked questions or contact our practice today.
