Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery at Our Fort Worth Practice – Benefits and Risks

Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery can effectively help patients lose weight by significantly reducing the amount of food that the stomach can hold at one time. In addition, the procedure limits the amount of calories and fat that are absorbed. Dr. David Kim is one of the premier weight loss surgeons in North Texas, and he has performed laparoscopic gastric bypass for many patients from the Dallas-Fort Worth area at his North Richland Hills, Texas center. Our practice has been honored as a “Center of Excellence” by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. We pride ourselves on helping our patients experience the benefits of laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, and we perform the procedure with a high level of care and low complication rates.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery

  • With laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, our patients can lose up to 80 percent of their excess body weight.
  • Patients experience dramatic weight loss in the first year after surgery.
  • It offers long-lasting weight loss results and has been proven to increase the lifespan of the patient.
  • It is excellent in potentially curing a patient of diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and other life threatening illnesses related to obesity.
  • Gastric bypass surgery has a 40-year history of success. The procedure has been thoroughly studied and its results are well-documented.
  • There are no adjustments to be made after surgery.

Disadvantages of Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery

  • Although laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is less invasive than open gastric bypass surgery, it is a major operation with more risk than LAP-BAND® Surgery or gastric sleeve resection.  Complications such as infections or blood clots are more likely. Death is a rare complication, but patients must understand that it is a distinct possibility after gastric bypass. Other options are available, including LAP-BAND® Surgery.
  • Recovering from laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery can take slightly longer than recovering from other types of bariatric procedures. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery patients usually need two weeks to recover before returning to work or other regular activities.
  • Vitamin deficiencies are rare but possible side effects of gastric bypass surgery. Patients will be required to supplement their diet after surgery with calcium, iron, and other vitamins.
  • After gastric bypass surgery, some patients may get sick after eating sweets and will need to remove sugary foods from their diets.

Although there are risks associated with laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, as well as with other types of bariatric procedures, there is often a greater risk involved in not doing anything to treat obesity. The disease has been shown to shorten lives, in some cases by as much as 20 years. Dr. Kim and the staff at the Live Life Again Center for Bariatric Surgery have dedicated their careers to helping patients overcome this disease and live fuller, longer lives.
