BMI Calculator

What does your BMI mean?

BMI 18-24
= Normal Weight
BMI 25-29
= Overweight
BMI 30-34
= Moderate Obesity
BMI 35-39
= Severe Obesity
BMI > 40
= Morbid Obesity

BMI, or body mass index, is a system of measurement that helps a patient figure out how overweight he or she is. A BMI of 20 to 25 is considered normal. 25 to 30 is considered overweight. 30.1 to 34.9 is considered obese. You are a candidate for weight loss surgery if your BMI is 40 or greater or if you have a BMI between 35 and 39.9 along with a serious health problem. The U.S. FDA has recently approved the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System for use in patients who have a BMI of 30 or more and at least one serious health problem (comorbidity) related to obesity.

"I thought I was a pretty happy fat person. Hiding behind my jokes and laughter, I did not know how much my weight controlled my life. I never knew what true happiness was until I had my surgery. Some people don't like to tell people when they have had weight loss surgery but I tell everyone because I feel everyone deserves to be this happy!"

Serving the Fort Worth, Dallas and Arlington areas – Bariatric Surgeon David D. Kim, M.D.

Dr. David D. Kim is passionate about helping his patients overcome the disease of morbid obesity. His skill, experience, and exemplary results have helped him earn recognition as a “Surgeon of Excellence” from the American Society of Bariatric Surgery. He is one of the few weight loss surgeons to receive this honor in the Fort Worth, Dallas, and Arlington areas. He was the first bariatric surgeon in Fort Worth to perform laparoscopic gastric bypass, a complicated procedure considered by many to be the bariatric treatment that requires the most surgical skill. He pioneered the laparoscopic gastric sleeve operation and has performed thousands of sleeve surgeries, identifying his experience as one of the largest series in North America. Because of his vast experience with all of the bariatric procedures, Dr. Kim welcomes you to make a private consultation with him to discuss which option is best for you.

Message from Dr. Kim

I love bariatric surgery because my patients who have suffered so much and for so long have the opportunity to regain their health and self-esteem. All of this leads to improvement in the quality of one's life after surgery… truly allowing a bariatric patient to Live Life Again.
