BMI Calculator
What does your BMI mean?
BMI, or body mass index, is a system of measurement that helps a patient figure out how overweight he or she is. A BMI of 20 to 25 is considered normal. 25 to 30 is considered overweight. 30.1 to 34.9 is considered obese. You are a candidate for weight loss surgery if your BMI is 40 or greater or if you have a BMI between 35 and 39.9 along with a serious health problem. The U.S. FDA has recently approved the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System for use in patients who have a BMI of 30 or more and at least one serious health problem (comorbidity) related to obesity.
"After losing 127 pounds with weight loss surgery I was able to stop my thyroid medicine. Numerous other medical issues also cleared up completely! I am now able to enjoy life with my extremely active kids and husband. We love to go camping. I feel very blessed to have been able to have this surgery and believe that it was the best decision that I could have made for myself and my family. Dr. Kim and his staff have been wonderful!
Thank you for your contribution and support!

The Live Life Again Center is one of the few bariatric surgery centers in the U.S. to offer an effective weight loss surgery procedure called Biliary Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch. This procedure has proven successful with patients who have severe morbid obesity, often with a body mass index (BMI) of more than 50. However, the procedure can be performed in patients who have a BMI of under 50 as well. The duodenal switch procedure can help morbidly obese patients lose up to 85 percent of excess weight. Dr. David D. Kim can perform this procedure laparoscopically, leading to a reduced recovery time and fewer incisions made during surgery.
Please contact Dr. Kim for more information on Biliary Pancreatic Diversion (BPD) with Duodenal Switch at our Dallas – Fort Worth, Texas-area bariatric surgery center.
Biliary Pancreatic Diversion, also known as BPD, reduces the size of the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch. The procedure restricts the amount of food that can be consumed in one sitting, and alters the small intestine to make it possible for bile and pancreatic juices to meet digested food closer to the middle or the end of it – leading to less absorption of calories and nutrients by the body.
About 3/4ths of the stomach is removed during BPD with duodenal switch, restricting food intake as well as output of acids. The duodenum is a part of the small intestine. This end of the small intestine is re-routed to the new stomach pouch, separating the flow of pancreatic juices and bile. This allows for digestive juices and food to meet in the lower part of the intestine – creating malabsorption of calories. Ultimately, Biliary Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch is both a restrictive and a malabsorptive weight loss surgery procedure. It restricts the amount of food intake by making the stomach smaller, and cuts down on the amount of nutrients and calories the body absorbs.
The entire BPD with Duodenal Switch procedure takes about two to three hours to complete.
Biliary Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch can be performed laparoscopically using tiny instruments and small incisions. This typically results in less recovery time and less residual scarring from incisions. Many patients can return to less physically rigorous types of work after about two weeks, and more physically strenuous work or activities can often be resumed after a month.
Patients should be mindful that this procedure, like other bariatric surgery treatments, is only one step in an ongoing process designed to help with weight loss. Follow-up appointments with Dr. Kim will be necessary to make sure you are healing properly and that you are losing weight safely and effectively. There are a variety of lifestyle and dietary changes that will be required after surgery to provide patients with the tools they need to maintain a healthy and successful weight loss.
