BMI, or body mass index, is a system of measurement that helps a patient figure out how overweight he or she is. A BMI of 20 to 25 is considered normal. 25 to 30 is considered overweight. 30.1 to 34.9 is considered obese. You are a candidate for weight loss surgery if your BMI is 40 or greater or if you have a BMI between 35 and 39.9 along with a serious health problem. The U.S. FDA has recently approved the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System for use in patients who have a BMI of 30 or more and at least one serious health problem (comorbidity) related to obesity.

"I thought I was a pretty happy fat person. Hiding behind my jokes and laughter, I did not know how much my weight controlled my life. I never knew what true happiness was until I had my surgery. Some people don't like to tell people when they have had weight loss surgery but I tell everyone because I feel everyone deserves to be this happy!"

DR. DAVID KIM: There are some things that you need to know about the impact of obesity as it relates to our general public. The CDC has stated that obesity is a critical public health problem. There are 500,000 deaths annually as a result of obesity related deaths. 36 percent of all Texans are overweight.
Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death, only following that of cigarette smoking. In the United States there are 34 million Americans who are considered overweight. 8 million Americans are considered to be severely overweight or obese. 25 percent of all children are overweight or obese, and people are starting to recognize type 2 diabetics in children as young as 9 years old. $238 billion will be spent on obesity related expenditures every year, and finally studies have conclusively proven that younger patients with obesity will shorten their lifespan by as much as 20 years.
My patients with obesity and morbid obesity will fail conventional diet plans 98 percent of the time. They’re able to lose weight on almost any diet plan, but after the diet stops, and they all do, they will often regain their weight. This continuous yoyo effect can lead to a progressive weight gain, as well as continued deteriorating health.
I want my patients to understand that they are not solely responsible because of these genetic traits within them that lead them to fail, so they really owe it to themselves to seek permanent solutions, surgical options that have been proven to help on a permanent, long term basis in helping them get rid of these medical problems.
