What does your BMI mean?
BMI, or body mass index, is a system of measurement that helps a patient figure out how overweight he or she is. A BMI of 20 to 25 is considered normal. 25 to 30 is considered overweight. 30.1 to 34.9 is considered obese. You are a candidate for weight loss surgery if your BMI is 40 or greater or if you have a BMI between 35 and 39.9 along with a serious health problem. The U.S. FDA has recently approved the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System for use in patients who have a BMI of 30 or more and at least one serious health problem (comorbidity) related to obesity.
"I thought I was a pretty happy fat person. Hiding behind my jokes and laughter, I did not know how much my weight controlled my life. I never knew what true happiness was until I had my surgery. Some people don't like to tell people when they have had weight loss surgery but I tell everyone because I feel everyone deserves to be this happy!"

DR. DAVID KIM: Kathy and Melissa are two very valuable people in our Center. They are experts in the field of insurance approvals and finance. We understand that this is a vital issue to our patients, and they can help people through this entire sometimes overwhelming process, so they can get to surgery and so they can begin their journey to a healthier person.
MS. KATHY POWELL: My name is Kathy, and I’m the insurance and financing specialist here in the practice. You’ll first meet me at the seminar, where I will talk to you about insurance requirements and the financing options that we have available, and then we’ll also have a lot of contact on the phone. We will walk you through your insurance approval process and you’ll talk to me on a frequent basis. The thing I like most about this job and what I do, what I find most rewarding, is I empathize a lot with our patients, I understand what they’re going through and how important this is to them, and I really enjoy being able to get them approved for surgery and see them have their surgery, and see their life change afterwards. That’s very rewarding.
MS. MELISSA BERNARD: My name is Melissa. I’ve been with Dr. Kim since 2004. I’m insurance financial specialist. You will meet me whenever you’re ready to go through the program and get your insurance going. I’ll help you through the process from the beginning to the end.
I love working with the patients, I love seeing the life changes that they go through, what happens from beginning to the end with the surgery, and I love working with office staff and the people, I just enjoy all the people I work with, and Dr. Kim, he’s wonderful, I just love him.
The patients love Dr. Kim. He’s an awesome doctor.
